As relevant as it was on the first day it opened on Broadway (and possibly even more so today), THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE SMELL OF THE CROWD is a delightful satire on the way people of different classes treat each other. The pompous, autocratic Sir engages the meek, subservient Cocky in a symbolic Game of Life, which Sir always seems to win mainly by manipulating the game and changing the rules whenever it suits him to do so. Does Cocky stand any chance of emerging victorious in this apparently rigged game? You'll just have to see the show yourself to find out!
With a soaring musical score by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, many of the songs are easily identified even by people who have never heard of the show. Songs such as Who Can I Turn To (made popular by Newley himself) and Feelin' Good (which climbed various pop charts in versions by Nina Simone, Michael Buble, John Coltrane and many others) will bring smiles of recognition, but will also understanding as they poignantly highlight the struggles between the characters.
Playing four weeks in May at the EXIT Theatre, Landmark Musical Theatre is proud to bring this show back to San Francisco. Local performers Scott Ayres, Samantha Cori, Juanita Harris, Julian O'Byrne and Heather Steffen lead the cast. The show is directed by Landmark's artistic director, Jonathan Rosen (The Boy From Oz, Tomfoolery, HAiR), with musical direction by Brian Allan Hobbs (Rocky Horror Show, West Side Story, Les Miserables).
