GENERAL INFORMATION ON RENT
La Vie Boheme! Jonathan Larson's iconic award-winning musical shaped a generation of audiences and taught us all to measure our life in love. Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT has become a pop cultural phenomenon, with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Based loosely on Puccini's opera La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's RENT follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.
This is theatre at its best – exuberant, passionate and joyous.
IMPORTANT! HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Everyone who participates in in-person auditions, callbacks, rehearsals and performances must meet mandated requirements and take a number of safety precautions in order to be eligible for consideration including:
- Provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination (including the required two-week waiting period from your final dose).
- Wearing of masks at auditions, callbacks, rehearsals and performances except as permitted by the health orders (masks may be removed when actively rehearsing or performing or preparing to do so)
- Practicing social distancing as much as reasonably possible
Please read the detailed company safety requirements which can be found by CLICKING HERE.
AUDITION REGISTRATION
There will be one day of in-person auditions, on Saturday, April 16, from 1 PM to 6 PM. Alternatively, anyone may audition by submitting a video audition. All performers will be considered equally regardless of whether they audition in-person or by video.
Callbacks will be offered by invitation only to selected candidates who register for auditions on time using the registration button above (or by CLICKING HERE) no later than Friday, April 15, 2022, and who properly submit a video audition or who schedule to appear in person on Saturday, April 16.
A complete audition registration includes:
- Entering all personal and professional information requested in the registration form
- Accurately completing the conflict calendar in the registration form
- Uploading a resume in .pdf format via the appropriate registration form button
- Uploading a headshot in .jpg, .png or .pdf format via the appropriate registration form button
- If you are auditioning in person, selecting your desired audition block (1 PM, 2 PM, 3:30 PM or 4:30 PM)
- If you are auditioning by video audition, creating and saving a video as described in the next topic and including a URL link to it in your registration form
- You may opt to submit a video audition AND appear in person, but doing so will not improve your chances of being selected for a callback.
THE IN-PERSON AUDITION
Please arrive on time for your audition slot and be ready to sing immediately (within an audition block, auditioner order will be determined randomly).
Please bring clothing and shoes suitable to move in if you are asked to learn a dance step. There are locations in the theater and the building where you can change in private.
Prepare a song from 32-64 bars long (less than 2 minutes) to sing. The song should be an upbeat non-musical theater type of song (pop, rock, etc.) We encourage you to listen to one of the available albums on a web-streaming music site like Spotify to familiarize yourself with the song styles if you aren't already familiar with the show.
You will be asked to answer the question "What does the musical RENT mean to you?" during the in-person audition.
THE VIDEO AUDITION
The video audition should be under two minutes in length and must include:
- A "slate" - your name, where you are from, and what role(s) you are interested in
- Part of a song, preferably no more than 32 bars (45-60 seconds), which demostrates your singing ability
- A brief answer to the following question: What does the musical RENT mean to you?
If you like, your song can also demonstrate your movement/dance ability, but this is NOT required.
You may record this video in any way that permits you to save it for online web access. You may use a cell phone (portrait or landscape orientation are acceptable), a laptop camera or regular video camera or camcorder. It is NOT necessary that these auditions be "professionally" recorded. We are interested in the quality of your performance, not the quality of your camera and sound equipment.
The answer to the question about what RENT means to you is important. As it says in our introduction video, "Not only do we want to hear your beautiful voices, we want to get to know you!"
CALLBACKS
After the in-person auditions, we will invite people to callbacks who have registered for this production on-time and have auditioned either via video submission or in person.
Callbacks will be held:
- Monday, April 18 from 7 PM to 11 PM
- Tuesday, April 19 from 7 PM to 11 PM
- Saturday, April 23 from 10 AM to 4 PM (final callback)
Callbacks will consist of:
- Song selections (solo and ensemble) from the score of RENT.
- A dance/movement audition. Please come with appropriate clothing and shoes for this part of the callback. There are places to change at the theater if needed.
Songs selections for callbacks will be available in printable sheet music form (.pdf) as well as .mp3 audio tracks on a callback resources page. When you receive your callback invitation, you will receive a link to the resource page and a password. Please do not distribute this information to anyone else. When you receive your callback invitation, it will indicate which role(s) you should prepare for.
LOCATION
Auditions, callbacks, most rehearsals and all performances will be held at:
- Landmark Musical Theatre
- 533 Sutter Street, 2nd Floor
- San Francisco, CA 94102
The theatre is located on Sutter Street between Powell and Mason.
For access to the theatre by public transit, take any SF Muni bus or BART to the Powell Street Muni/BART station on Market Street, walk 5 blocks north on Powell to Sutter Street and then turn left (west). The theatre is approximately 1/3 block west of Powell. You may also ride any cable car up Powell to Sutter ($8.00 fare or free with a Muni monthly pass).
Parking is available on the street at no charge all day Sunday and after 6:00 pm on weekdays and Saturdays. Parking can also be found at several nearby garages with fees from $3-$5/hour.
PERFORMANCES
The show runs from Saturday, July 9, 2022, through Sunday, August 14, 2022, with the possibility of an one-week extension through August 21, 2022. Performances will be at Landmark's new venue at 533 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94102 (2nd floor).
Because the extension is likely to occur, we are asking that you provide conflict information for all dates between July 9 and August 21. We will let everyone know by the time we start rehearsals if the extension is a "go" or not.
Performance times are expected to be as follows (but are subject to change before rehearsals start):
- Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 PM
- Sunday at 2:30 PM
Performances will run approximately 2-1/2 hours with a 15-minute intermission.
REHEARSALS
Rehearsals will start on May 15, 2022, and continue through the opening date. Rehearsals until tech week will generally be scheduled on:
- Monday-Thursday between 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm (but typically only 3 hours)
- Sunday between 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm (but typically only 4 hours)
The additional scheduled rehearsal time above is to allow for late starts, unexpected conflicts and other issues that arise from time to time.
Prior to the start of tech week (Saturday, July 2, 2022), we will NOT schedule rehearsals on:
- Monday-Thursday prior to 7:00 PM
- Friday-Saturday (at any time)
- Sunday before 1:00 PM
We may occasionally schedule Sunday evening rehearsals although that is an unlikely occurrence (intended only for emergencies) and will be discussed with the cast before being scheduled. We are NOT asking for Sunday evening conflicts at this time.
A detailed rehearsal and performance schedule will be available as soon as casting decisions are announced and conflicts are reviewed.
Tech week starts on Saturday, July 2, 2022, and continues through the Friday, July 8, 2022. Tech week rehearsals on the weekend may be long (up to 8 hours plus a lunch or dinner break) and on weekdays may start as early as 6:00 PM and are sometimes extended as late as midnight based on the demands of the show. We try hard to not run that long on weeknights, but it may be necessary during tech week. There will be at least one "dark" night for the cast during tech week.
COMPENSATION AND CONTRACTUAL INFORMATION
All actors will be required to sign the standard Landmark Musical Theatre Volunteer Agreement for rehearsals and performances, which includes expectations, rules of conduct and expense reimbursement policies.
A standard reimbursement stipend of $575 for travel, dinner, child care costs and other incidental expenses will be paid to each actor. This will be paid on the last day of tech week.
Landmark also offers a bonus based on a pool that is established once a break-even revenue point is reached. For RENT, that point is $50,000.00. Twenty percent (20%) of all revenue in excess of the break-even point is put into the bonus pool and that pool is divided between all actors in the cast on a pro rata basis based on the number of performances for each actor. The bonus, if any, will be paid on the last day of performances.
Landmark will also offer a sales incentive of five percent (5%) of each ticket sold using the actor's personal promotion code. This will be paid on the last day of performances.
There are no Actors' Equity contracts available for this production. Landmark is a signatory to Actors' Equity and is not permitted to knowingly offer work to any AEA member unless it is under an Actors' Equity contract. We thank you for honoring AEA rules and our intent to abide by them.
REGISTRATION
To register your interest in this production, please follow these instructions:
- Fill out the registration form (personal information, role interests, skills and conflicts) as completely as possible. The registration form can be found by CLICKING HERE.
- Upload a resume (.pdf) and headshot (.jpg, .png or .pdf). If you have participated in a previous 2021-2022 Landmark Musical Theatre production (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, All Together Now, Jolly Jamboree or You're A Good Man Charlie Brown), you are not required to submit these as your resume and headshot should already be on file. You may submit a new resume and/or headshot if you want to update your previous submission.
- If you are not auditioning in person, you must
submit a video audition link whether or not you have not
participated in a previous Landmark production. Please submit a complete url link (starting with

than 2 minutes and should consist of:
- A "slate" which provides your name, where you are from and the role(s) you are interested in.
- A short song selection (or two); songs should be in a rock or rock-theatre style but not from RENT; feel free to include your ability to dance/move as part of your song auditions but this is not a requirement.
- A brief statement which answers the question "What does RENT the Musical mean to you?"
- Please fill out our conflict calendar as accurately as you can. We will make every effort to work the rehearsal schedule around the cast members and their conflicts. However, you should be available for all nights of Tech Week and for all performances. If you do have conflicts for some of the performance dates, please let us know in as much detail as possible in case we decide to consider double-cast some roles or casting some understudies or swings.
- Press CLICK TO REGISTER at the bottom of the form when you are finished with the registration form.
- You should immediately receive a registration confirmation page which will include all of the information you entered on the form for your review.
- You will also receive an email within twenty-four hours confirming your registration.
